Oregon higher ed has to have a future, sometime
By David Sarasohn, The Oregonian

Considering the legislative record of Oregon universities, it’s almost a victory to say that in this session, higher education doesn’t seem to be getting battered any worse than other state efforts.

“It’s not doing as well as anybody would want it to be,” says Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, co-chair of Ways and Means, “but you could say that about any part of the state budget.”

And although Oregon universities rarely shine in NCAA...

EDITORIAL: End education’s civil war
By the Register Guard

Seven House districts in Oregon are home to state universities, but all 60 have public school districts. Guess which part of the state’s education system tends to prevail in the Legislature’s budgetary battles. The budgetary competition is destructive, not only for the Oregon University System but for schools at every level. Beggar-thy-neighbor education politics probably can’t be stopped, but Gov. John Kitzhaber has a plan to dampen its intensity.

Kitzhaber...

At the same time, UO would join the state’s other universities...

Public Universities Seek More Autonomy as Financing From States Shrinks
By Tamar Lewin, The New York Times

With states providing a dwindling share of money for higher education, many states and public universities are rethinking their ties.

The public universities say that with less money from state coffers, they cannot afford the complicated web of state regulations governing areas like procurement and building, and that they need more flexibility to compete with private institutions.

As a result, the fundamental model for supporting higher education is...

SALEM — Oregon’s public universities have asked the Legislature for more power to manage their affairs as they face a future that promises fewer taxpayer dollars and increased pressure to raise tuition.

A key senator, Democrat Mark Hass of Beaverton, said Tuesday more control for the universities could come in a measure lawmakers have been working on for more than a year. It would allow the schools greater control over broad areas such as personnel...
